Excited to receive NIH-NIA R01 competing continuation!

I am thrilled and deeply grateful to share that our team has received a competing continuation of our NIH R01 from the National Institute on Aging.

Project title: Transforming Clinical Trials for Elderly and Rare Cancers through Intelligent and Robust Information Borrowing
Project period: 2026–2031
Anticipated total support: approximately $2.2 million
Contact PI: Shu Yang, Department of Statistics, NC State University
MPI: Xiaofei Wang, Duke University

This award continues our NIA-supported research program that began in 2020. Clinical trials for elderly patients and rare cancers often face limited sample sizes, which makes it difficult to generate reliable evidence for the populations who need it most. Our project develops and advances causal inference and AI/ML methods to improve clinical trial design and analysis with real-world data, so that information can be borrowed from historical trials and other external sources in a principled and robust way.

I am excited about the next five years of this work and grateful to my MPI, Dr. Xiaofei Wang, our students and collaborators, NC State, Duke, and the National Institute on Aging for their continued support.

We are open to collaborations. If you work in clinical trials, real-world evidence, oncology, aging research, or data integration and would like to connect, please reach out at [email protected].
